(Success Story/Testimonial submitted by the Russell Home for Atypical Children)

“We are so pleased we encouraged Tanya to pursue her dream of founding a business to benefit other handicapped children, since we saw how our children responded to her Creative Dance Program. This is a music and dance program that provides strong educational components as well. Even the children with wheelchairs participate and enjoy it! Our children feel a sense of accomplishment and pride when Tanya rewards them during and at the end of each class. We encourage other facilities to consider Creative Dance Expressions, Inc. This program has enhanced the lives of our many children with special needs. We credit the success of this program to Tanya’s ability to recognize each person’s special need and to create expressions in meeting them. She does this with heartfelt sincerity. We commend you, Tanya!”

(Information about the Russell Home for Atypical Children)

“Let all you do…be done from Love!”

“The Russell Home for Atypical Children was the first non-profit institution in the country for brain-damaged children. Mrs. Russell opened her home to the first child in the early ‘50’s. She proudly displayed the typewritten Orange County Occupational License Number 1, dated November 13, 1951. Since then, ‘Grandma Russell’ and her family have opened their home to hundreds of youngsters.

The Russell Home is ‘Home’ for a number of children and adults with the mental age of children whose handicaps prevent their independent functioning in the community. The Russell Home provides around the clock specialized care, love, and a ‘Home-like atmosphere so vital to their special needs.’ The Russell Home also provides day care on a regular or part time basis, as well as temporary respite care during vacations, emergency situations, or just a break, for parents whose handicap child lives at home.

Each person is encouraged to develop to his or her own potential, at their own pace. Every effort and accomplishment of each person is recognized, they exhibit a sense of pride as a result and this is encouraged. Grandma Russell instilled, ‘Loving them and making them feel wanted is the most important commodity in meeting their needs.’ Her legacy continues to this very day. On June 4, 2003, Mrs. Vantrease ‘Grandma’ Russell passed away. This great lady will be sorely missed, but never forgotten. Her legacy continues to this day in the children that come to know the ‘Russell Home’ as their home.

The Russell Home is and will continue to be operated by the late Mrs. Russell’s children, grandchildren, and dedicated staff under the direction of the Board of Directors. By choice, the Russell Home operates without the benefit of federal, state, or local funding. The purpose being to eliminate possible restrictions that would defeat the founding principal of the home, that acceptance be based solely on the need for the services offered and to prevent the possibility of having to choose which child could stay and which child they’d have to turn away. Thus, the Russell Home over the years has captured the interest and support of the surrounding community. Many have asked how they can help continue Grandma Russell’s Mission of caring for all of the loving children. In addition to your thoughts and prayers, contributions are the Russell Home’s primary means of support and there is always need for household supplies, food items, and other essentials. Any contribution is greatly appreciated! The Russell Home for Atypical Children is a 501-C Charitable Organization, all monetary gifts are tax-deductible.”
